As London Fashion Week draws to a close the general public get the opportunity to attend London Fashion Weekend, sponsored by Canon and Vodafone. As part of Canons programme they invite photographers along to experience what it’s like to be a pro photographer shooting from the photographers pit and I was very fortunate to get the chance to attend this year. The day started off with everyone meeting at One Aldwych Hotel where the Canon pro team gave us a briefing about the event and what to expect. They run through some camera settings for those new to this type of photography and handed out our passes. It was only a short walk across to this years venue, Somerset House and after a brief wait we were escorted in and told where to stand.
The actual photographers area was tiny, you had possibly a square foot to stand in and had to make the best of your position. The event was kicked off by Angela Scanlon, Presenter and fashion writer and stylist and as soon as she had welcomed everyone and told stories of the past weeks events and highlights the show got under way. It was quite dark in there and making sure you had the right camera settings in lace with the lights constantly changing was a real challenge. Basically I was working an ISO of anywhere between 800-1000 and an approx shutter speed of 400th of a second, aperture I kept at f5.6. The models one by one grace the catwalk and prowled along towards us then turned and went back down another route. It all went so fast and as I was using 12 fps I filled a 16GB CF card within a matter of minutes.
All in all it was a fantastic day and a great experience to be a part of. As a landscape photographer it was great to try something different and I would thoroughly recommend it as it mentally tests you and your knowledge of your cameras settings and layout, something which can only be a good thing. I’d like to thank all the Canon staff for making it such a great day and handing out free chocolate!
